Description
The Manuel Rodriguez FCL-1L is a concert classical guitar built for players who have outgrown the student repertoire and now need an instrument that answers back. It pairs a solid spruce top with Indian rosewood back and sides — the pairing that has defined the Spanish concert guitar for more than a century — and it is put together using traditional workshop methods rather than modern shortcuts.
Manuel Rodriguez is one of the few Spanish names with a documented lineage. The workshop was founded in Madrid in 1905 and is the second-oldest guitar manufacture in Spain, run today by the third generation of the family. That continuity matters here in a practical way: the FCL-1L is not an interpretation of Spanish building tradition, it is a product of it.
The top is solid spruce. Spruce takes longer to open up than cedar, and a new instrument can feel reserved for the first months of playing. What you get in return is headroom. A spruce top keeps its definition when you push it, which is exactly what a concert guitar has to do in the last row of a hall. The Indian rosewood back and sides add density and a long, complex decay — the bass is firm rather than boomy, and the trebles keep a bell-like clarity well up the fingerboard.
Construction details are where the FCL-1L separates itself from factory instruments in the same bracket. The neck is Spanish cedar with an ebony reinforcement strip, shaped to a comfortable D profile that stays predictable across the whole neck. The Spanish heel — where neck and body are built as one unit rather than joined afterwards — is the traditional method and it transmits string energy into the top more directly. Nut and saddle are bone, not plastic, which is audible in the attack and matters more than most buyers expect.
The guitar ships with Hannabach 815HTC Silver Special strings and a polyurethane gloss finish on back and sides. It is an instrument for advanced students, teachers and performing guitarists — anyone preparing recital programmes, taking exams, or recording. A beginner would not be badly served by it, but would not hear most of what they were paying for.
